Now it is difficult to imagine the design of premises without the use of a ceiling skirting board or, as it is also called, crown molding from plastic (polystyrene, polyurethane or expanded polystyrene). The correct scientific name for this device is a fillet.
Crown molding allows you to hide all the irregularities on the wall-ceiling boundary and gives perfection to the interior of the room. Now we will talk about how to glue the crown molding and how to cut the corners of the crown moldings.
How to attach crown molding
The most common are three ways how to put up crown molding:
- Mechanical fastening.
- Bonding to the wall.
- Glue to wallpaper.
The first method is used when the paneling of the suspended ceiling is made. In this case, a special fixing bar is installed, and a plinth of plastic is fixed on it.
Well, the best option is to stick a crown molding to the wall. In this case, with subsequent repairs, you can simply change the wallpaper, without re-installing the skirting boards.
It will be easier to repair the gaps before pasting the wallpaper. As a result, the plinth looks harmoniously in the interior.
Align walls and ceiling
At the inner corners of the plinth, apply glue. Aim that the excess glue does not come out. The adhesive will be described in more detail below.
For a short while, attach the panel to the place where you will paste it, remove it and let it seize with glue. Then pour the plinth into the same place, pressing it a little.
Strongly press on the surface is not necessary, to avoid dents and cracks.
The following bars lubricate the adhesive on the contact surfaces to the wall, ceiling and the previous bar. Having reached the corner, measure the distance to it and with the help of the dress cut the skirting.
When all skirting boards are attached around the perimeter, fill all joints, gaps and slots.
If you want to add colors, paint the plinth, only very carefully.
Further we will consider process of fastening of a ceiling skirting with use of a mechanical fastening:
- Corner elements are fixed;
- The mounting plate is attached with self-tapping screws with an interval of 12-20 in;
- Next, the installation is made, the ceiling skirting board is mounted on the reinforced parts of the structure.
Crown molding of polyurethane installation does not differ from the others, the corners should be cut exactly the same.
How to cut crown molding
Cutting the corners of the skirting should be done very carefully and carefully to perfectly match them in the corners. To do this, use a miter box – a special carpenter’s device for cutting at an angle, usually at 45°.
The main rule when working: first cut the angle, and then adjust the length of the bar.
Note that most of the skirting has an asymmetrical shape – one side is longer and the other is shorter. In this case, you need to fasten the long part to the wall, and the short one to the ceiling.
When all the corners are even in the room, the process is very simple – cut the fillets with a sharp knife with a stool. Keep in mind, at the bottom of the miter box should be put side, which will be glued to the ceiling.

Keep the skirting smoothly so that gaps do not form in the corners, which then are difficult to seal.
But what if the corners in the room are not straight? Here, the miter box is not useful – take a pencil.
First, attach one plinth to the wall and draw lines along the sides to the very corner – there will be two straight strips. Then attach the plinth to the adjacent wall and draw two more straight lines.
Mark the intersection points first on the ceiling and walls, and then, applying the plinth, move the points on them. As a result, we obtained two fillets with landmarks – two marks, on which the cut must be made.
To begin with, you can practice cutting corners on extra pieces. Trim the slats at the outer corners, leaving a few millimeters in reserve – then the excess can be easily sanded.
Internal corners should be puttied with a pistol using acrylic sealant, and then colored.
How to cut crown molding corners
Where corners are most visible and conspicuous, you need to use the longest plinths, since this will make it possible to make fewer joints.
It is necessary during the cutting of the corners to closely follow the edges of the fillet racks.
Do not forget to tightly press the plinth to the stool and not moving to keep it during cutting. But it is not necessary to press very strongly, it is possible to spoil the material.
After cutting the required length, we install a crown molding. The main thing is that the very miter box had angles of 45 and 90 degrees for cutting crown molding angles and they were really even.
